SMOKE ON THE WATER
DETROIT NEWS PHOTO, MARCH 31, 1931

201728

With smoke pouring from its funnel, the overnight passenger and freight steamer Western States passes warehouses, railroad yards, and docks as it plies the Detroit River. When this photograph was taken in 1931, most of Detroit’s skyscrapers were only a few years old. Bright and gleaming skyscrapers contrasted against the grimy, soot-stained buildings just blocks away along the riverfront, many of which were built in the 1800s.
